Dr. Itay Kohane, Psy.D

My passion in the field of psychology began in competitive sports, after playing basketball in high-school and finishing an Ironman race. Following eight years of service in the Israeli Air Force as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, I moved to the US to finish my doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

My clinical work began volunteering with Sudanese refugees in Israel. In the US, I worked at substance abuse rehab facilities and then continued working with children, adolescents, and families, focusing on trauma, depression, and anxiety. Later, I worked at an LGBTQ+ and HIV+ center, as well as with the elderly at assisted living facilities.

As part of my professional experience, I completed 3 years training in a body-mind trauma-focused therapy — Somatic Experiencing. Additionally, I am certified by MAPS for MDMA-Assisted Therapy for trauma and PTSD, and trained in Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy for depression and anxiety, IFS (Internal Family Systems), as well as Attachment Focused-EMDR for trauma and PTSD. My doctorate research was about Infertility Challenges for Orthodox Jewish Couples and had the privilege of interviewing this population for the first time about this topic.

Currently, I have a private practice in Los Angeles and work as a Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Supervisor for doctorate interns at a substance abuse rehab for drugs and alcohol in Malibu. I work with children and adults in individual, couples, and family settings.

I believe our thoughts and behaviors have evolved to shield us from painful experiences and ultimately minimize the possibility of their repetition. As a behavioral health expert, I specialize in my work with adult and teenage clientele who struggle with substance use and various addictions, trauma, anxiety, unhealthy relationships, stagnation and life transitions, depression, grief and loss. My therapeutic approach is authentic, warm, and non-traditional in that I mold my therapeutic approach to meet your individual needs. I choose this approach because I believe therapy to be most helpful when an individual can sit in front of another individual at eye-level and feel comfortable to explore their thoughts and emotions in their purest and unpolished form–as they are.

I completed my Masters and Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Interdisciplinary Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. My doctorate research was focused on adults in outpatient treatment centers who were actively struggling with substance use. The experimental study aimed to determine whether relapse can be predicted according to a client’s understanding and use of coping skills, self-efficacy beliefs, and which stage of change they are in. Currently, I am employed as a substance use and mental health individual and group psychotherapist at Oro House Recovery Centers and accept patients both in-person and virtually in private practice. I am bilingual in English and Hebrew. I am registered through ASAM and am a registered Drug and Alcohol Counselor by CAADE. Additionally, I am certified in trauma-informed care. My personal hobbies and interests include, singing, traveling, spending time outdoors, open-water diving, and cooking delicious new recipes. I look forward to joining you on your path to healing, should you invite me along your journey.
